If you are considering country decor as the look for your home, it is a good idea to establish exactly what this style means to you. There are many takes on a theme and what you consider a country decor theme others may think of as shabby chic or perhaps rustic or maybe even Tuscan so have a good look at what is available to you and what will be the most easily adapted to your home. Even if you have a delightful English cottage in the country with roses around the door, you will still probably want some guidance and inspiration for your home decoration theme.

Traditional country homes often have very small windows and part of the overall decorating theme is selecting curtains or window dressings to allow light to flood into your room. So whilst pelmets and swags may scream country at you, do consider if that is the best solution for your room. Lace curtains can also darken a room, so unless you are overlooked consider having nothing to restrict the light flow at your window.

Victorian or Edwardian homes tend to have large windows that allow light to stream in and can usually cope with heavy drapes complete with all the trimmings. Smaller windows may need the curtains set so that when you open them in the day, all of the window is revealed, meaning all the available light can brighten your day.

An open fire really does make the country style complete, if you have not got a fireplace consider installing one, perhaps with a living flame, or you can purchase electric fires that have the look of a classic log burning stove to them. A fireplace with mantle shelf really sets a room apart, so no matter what fire you chose, an ornamental fire surround is a good addition to your room. Try adding a large mirror above the mantle. Not only does this add style, but brings even more light into the room.

Floral patterns do compliment a country look, but be careful not to overdo this as too much pattern can swamp a room. If you have floral furniture keep the walls free from pattern, use pictures or mirrors to inject some personality or perhaps some dried flower arrangements. If however your furniture is neutral then a small amount of floral wall paper can really set the scene. Floor lamps can have floral shades also

As long as they are not competing with to many other floral touches. Wall sconces to light up the room are another good idea and if you have low ceilings a central light is often not practical or appealing.

Oh yes the open fire! It will never be a true country home without one. ;) And every kid should be able to toast marshmallows in winter in front of the hearth.
